WA-08 race breakdown

Washington's 8th District (eastern King County: Sammamish, Issaquah, Snoqualmie Valley, Maple Valley; across the Cascades to Wenatchee and Ellensburg) Non-Hispanic Asian residents are about 11.0% of the district (about 86,100 of 781,768, Data USA's 2024 ACS-based profile). Sammamish and Issaquah have large Chinese and Indian American communities. A district-level AAPI citizen voting-age share was not verified. (Data USA).

Competitiveness Solid D: Cook has rated it Solid D since January 8, 2026; PVI D+3. Schrier has won every general by 2-9 points since 2018 (54-46 in 2024). District-wide, she took the August primary 53.69% to Meline's 15.83% (certified), and a September model gives her a >99% chance. The second primary slot was razor-thin: Spencer Meline's election-night lead of 7 votes over second-place finisher Trinh Ha grew to a certified margin of 1,984 votes (Meline 30,324, Ha 28,340). Meline is a first-time candidate; through the July 15, 2026 FEC reports Schrier reported $3,016,893.52 in cycle receipts to his $126,516.63, about 23.8-to-1.

Kim Schrier Democrat · Incumbent since 2019

Sammamish pediatrician, the first in Congress. Energy & Commerce Committee; former Education & Labor Committee member. CAPAC member.

Immigration & Visas★★★☆☆

Supportive of legal and skilled immigration on paper. Original cosponsor of the bipartisan Farm Workforce Modernization Act (2019), which creates a path to citizenship for farm workers. Her 2026 platform pledges to "expand and improve worker visas that agricultural and technology-based economies all across our district depend upon." But she voted YEA on the Laken Riley Act (Jan 2025, one of 46 Democrats on final passage), is not a cosponsor of the DIGNIDAD Act, and has no H-1B-specific bill work. Mixed (GovTrack; campaign site; GovTrack).

Zoning & Neighborhoods★★★★☆

Cosponsored the Streamlining Rural Housing Act of 2025 (H.R. 4989). Also authored H.R. 8127, the Permanent Housing Affordability Act, on March 26, 2026, proposing shared- equity homeownership support; it remains introduced. Her August 2024 release described earlier housing-project funds, including senior-veteran units, Enumclaw units and YWCA preservation. No specific AAPI-neighborhood rezoning position was found in the checked sources. (H.R. 8127; 2024 release). Voted Yea on the June 23, 2026 House motion to concur in the amended H.R. 6644 housing bill (Roll Call 224, 358-32). [House vote] Rating basis: Authorship of shared-equity housing legislation and earlier housing-project work exceed the old one-cosponsorship premise. Remains distinct from AAPI-neighborhood rezoning.

Education★★★★★

Consistent pro-public-education record without an AANHPI-specific item. Former Education & Labor Committee member. Platform backs universal pre-K, expanded school meals and college affordability. Enacted child-nutrition and children's mental-health legislation plus school-based health clinic funding. She is not a cosponsor of the Teaching AANHPI History Act (H.R. 3551) (campaign site; GovTrack). Rating basis: Sustained child-nutrition and children's mental-health leadership across multiple Congresses, with her campaign identifying enacted provisions and an ongoing school-investment platform. This is broad Education leadership, not AANHPI-history authorship.

Language Access★★★☆☆

Not a cosponsor of H.R. 7223. Cosponsored H.Res. 908 on April 3, 2020 and voted Yea on September 17. The resolution condemns anti-Asian sentiment and recommits to language access and inclusive communication. It is nonbinding and COVID-specific, not an enacted interpreter-services program. (cosponsors; adopted text; vote). Rating basis: Nonbinding, multipart and 2020-dated language-access resolution cosponsorship/Yea. Limited supportive evidence, consistent with 3 for symbolic language-access advocacy rather than enacted services.

Justice & Hate Crimes★★★★☆

Voted YEA on the COVID-19 Hate Crimes Act (House Roll Call 145, May 18, 2021; vote record verified) and is a member of the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus. No authored hate-crime statute was found in the checked sources. Also cosponsored H.Res. 908 on April 3, 2020 and voted Yea September 17, condemning anti-Asian sentiment and supporting language access; this was a nonbinding resolution. (resolution; vote). [GovTrack]

Spencer Meline Republican

First-time candidate. Owns three restaurants in the district. Endorsed by the King County and Snohomish County GOP organizations. Financial comparisons require matched reporting periods; newer October filings supersede the earlier July snapshot.

Immigration & Visas★★☆☆☆

Rated on statements only. His "Smart & Secure Immigration" plank is enforcement-first: "enforce immigration law consistently," and immigration policy shouldn't "reward those who broke the rules." He answered "Strongly Disagree" on sanctuary cities in the iVoterGuide survey, while explicitly backing legal immigration and acknowledging that Washington's farms depend on a stable legal workforce. No skilled-visa position was found despite the district's tech economy. Leans against without opposing legal immigration (campaign site; iVoterGuide).

Zoning & Neighborhoods★★★★☆

Rated on statements only. His one concrete affordability plank would stop "large institutional investors from crowding out families in the single-family housing market" and pricing out first-time buyers. No position on zoning, density or development, and he has never held office (campaign site). Rating basis: Specific proposed restriction on large institutional homebuyers to improve first-buyer affordability. Platform-only, not enacted; same 4 rule as other concrete proposals.

Education★★★★☆

His current Education, Skills & Opportunity platform supports expanding apprenticeships, technical education and career training, practical-skills instruction, and parental transparency. In an August 2026 interview also backed a parental-consent approach to school social-transition policy. These are education positions, not a verified AANHPI- curriculum view. His iVoterGuide answer on abolishing the Education Department was a non-answer. [current platform] [dated interview] Rating basis: Current direct platform has specific apprenticeships/technical training and practical- skills education commitments. Specific supportive Education position, not merely parental-consent policy.

Language AccessNR

No campaign-site content, questionnaire answer or statement on multilingual services, ballot access or the English-official executive order was found.

Justice & Hate CrimesNR

His "Safe Communities" plank covers law-enforcement funding, open drug use, fentanyl and repeat offenders with nothing on hate crimes or bias-motivated violence. No AAPI- community statements or endorsements were located.
